WRITE - Explain the art criticism process. -
1.Describe: Tell exactly what you see
2.Analyze: Use the elements/principles to reflect upon the art form
3.Interpret: Consider the following ◦What is the artist trying to say?
◦What caused the artist to say it?
◦What is the historical milieu that surrounds the work of art?
◦Why was the work of art created in this particular style?
4.Evaluate: How successful or important is the work of art?
1.Describe: Tell exactly what you see: This project was a hybrid of two different objects to make one thing. I decided to use a whale and an IPhone. At the time I was looking at the table and saw my phone and also was thinking of a whale. I used the concept of the camera on the IPhone being on to give the illusion of it showing the other side. Their is deep water with a light blue sky. A small boat is rolling by. Their is a whale with a normal tail and an IPhone as its body. On the other side of the phone their is a octopus.
2.Analyze: Use the elements/principles to reflect upon the art form: I feel that this form of art is very interesting. It lets you use your imagination and choose really what ever you want to draw. You can just let your mind go freely and draw whatever you feel is right. This is also enjoyable because your mind wants to just keep adding different things that may help the art look more weird. Combining the two things make you think about the things in different ways and intergrade both objects into the art. For example using the iPhone camera to show the background.
3.Interpret: Consider the following ◦What is the artist trying to say?: In this piece I was trying to express two very unlike things and bring them together.
◦What caused the artist to say it?: I wanted to show that not everything in art must be completely logical and combine two very unique things.
◦What is the historical milieu that surrounds the work of art?: Their really was not historical reference to this art.
◦Why was the work of art created in this particular style?: I chose to do this piece using Prisma colored pencils. I chose this because they have bright colors and can show detail without going to overboard. They are also very efficient when coloring big areas.
4.Evaluate: How successful or important is the work of art?: I feel that this project turned out very well. The medium I used made it seem pretty realistic as well as the idea is not bad. I think that I could have spent a little more time with shading and detail but overall the idea is good. Combining the whale and iPhone gave a good illusion to something in a movie. It is important to see that not all art has to be realistic and it can be something you choose.
What is the point of this class? What did you get out of it? : I feel that the point of this class was to teach us that their are other options than math, science, English, and social studies. Their is a lot more career oppourunities that have to do with art. The class shows students that school can be fun and their are other things other than just core classes. What I learned from taking this class is that theirs really no such thing as good art and that you can really just let your imagination do what it wants. Their is no exact answer to a project and its really about what you feel. Whereas in math their is a specific answer to every question. In art you can really be free. Overall I had a lot of fun being able to start my day with something fun.
Illustration Fridays have been completed almost every week this semester, do you feel this assignment helped you brainstorm for main project or helped you skill levels in any way? Why, or why not?: I feel that illustration Friday has been one of the most fun things ive done in any class. Every week being able to have a topic and sketch it out was so awesome. This helped me be more creative and make something for myself. My sketching skill level has increased because of these and I feel more creative. Every week not having to make a random thing is worse than having a specific topic you can work off and figure out what you want to draw about. Illustration Friday was a staple in the class.
What did you find most difficult about this class? This could be anything from gathering materials, to generating projects ideas, to applying a particular technique. What could be done to resolve this issue in the future?: I feel that the hardest part of this class was generating ideas for my projects. Part of me just wanted to do the basic requirements and the other wanted to do a creative masterpiece. A lot of the time I had trouble with motivation when making my pieces. This may not be for everyone but for me I just didn't feel motivated to make anything crazy detailed. I don't think theirs a way to really fix this other than making sure students have enough time which you do pretty well with. I think that theirs someone who loves art and someone who doesn't. I just don't think I had much motivation for a lot of my projects.
